Episode Thoughts Day 6 5:00-6:00 PM

by on March 5th, 2007

This episode was a bit more exciting than last week.  Probably because we got to see more Jack.  The episode opens with the aftermath of the bomb blast in the President’s bunker.  We discover that President Palmer is badly wounded and Assad is dead.  As was the plan, everyone appears to be blaming Assad.  I’m surprised by this since right before it happened, Assad was the one who shouted "Bomb!" warning everyone and likely saving the president’s life.  Sadly, he won’t be able to clear his name.  When Secretary of Defense Heller calls a meeting to brief the Vice President about the situation, Chad Lowe’s character sits in for Lennox, claiming that he is on the phone with the Attorney General.  Heller is very upset by this and at the conclusion of the teleconference, tells the Secret Service to find Lennox as fast as possible.  Lowe’s character runs to the boiler room and asks his co-conspirator if he’s killed Lennox yet… Of course he had not.  At this point, he does was to kill Lennox, but Lowe won’t let him.  Once again, I think there’s a love connection there.  Anyway, he tries to talk Lennox into keeping quiet and they all leave the room together.  They are then stopped by the Secret Service and Lennox promptly turns both his captors in.

Meanwhile, Jack is forgetting his past, and taking Charles Logan into the Russian Consulate to talk with the Consul General.  Didn’t he learn anything from his two years of torture with the Chinese?  Logan speaks with the Consul, tries to blackmail him, but he won’t admit to knowing Gredenko.  Logan knows he’s lying and tells Jack when they leave the consulate.  At the same time, the Consul calls Gredenko to tell him that the Americans are on to him.  Jack gets the bright idea to call Chloe and have CTU shut down the consulate’s power.  Then he slips in, barges into the Consul General’s office and holds him at gunpoint.  Not surprisingly, the Russian guards notice and try to storm the room.  Jack says that he’ll kill the consul if they don’t leave him alone.  Next, Jack starts to beat the crap out of the consul demanding information.  When he refuses to talk, Jack cuts off his pinky finger with a cigar clipper.  The best part of this episode for me was when Jack threatened to cut off his fingers and made a snip-snip sound with the shears.  Ick. Classic Jack.  Finally, the consul coughs up the info, tells Jack where Gredenko is, and tells him that he is loading the remaining suitcase nukes in unmanned aerial drones to be dropped on the city in the next two hours.  When Jack drops his guard, the Russians burst in, and capture him.  Later, Jack manages to convince a guard to call CTU and warn them of Gredenko’s plot, but he is promptly shot by a fellow guard.  Perhaps the Russians have more to do with this than it first appeared.

Back to the bunker, the Vice President has now assumed command and gives a speech to the country outlining the enforcement of Lennox’s original detainment plans for Arab Americans and telling the country about the attempted assassination.  He is also left with the new challenge of trying to deal with the diplomatic mess Jack is creating at the consulate.  Remember Russian President Suberov?  He’s back and he’s not happy at all about the actions Jack has taken at the Los Angeles consulate.  Later, the Vice President meets with Lennox who tells him that Assad was not responsible for the bomb.  But the VP convinces him not to tell anyone so they can employ the new harsh domestic security measures without being questioned.

Looks like next week we’ll see Martha Logan again who appears to be with the President’s old bodyguard, Aaron Pierce.  Yay Aaron, what a great character.  Anyway, maybe next week we’ll get to see more of the terrorists, find out if President Palmer lives, and if Jack can get out of Russian captivity.  From the preview, it looks like CTU is going to storm the consulate.  That’ll be messy.  Stay tuned.

Good episode. Its starting to get tense. Jack is being held by the Russians. There’s drones loose. the crazy VP is taking over and about to let hell break loose throughout the US.

Loved how easily Jack spit out that Russian phrase to cover why he was there. Sucked when he let his guard down and got caught.

The snip-snip sound was classic! When I first saw it in the preview for this episode, I started cheering. Next episode should be awesome!

I find myself getting more frustrated with the new eposides. Last week Jack was seen all of three minutes in the entire hour. We want to see more of Jack and his story line.
