President David Palmer Knocks 24

by on March 25th, 2007

Wow, if I were the producers of 24 I’d be really pissed off by Dennis Haysbert’s comments about the show.  I wonder if they fired him?

Dennis Haysbert used to be a big fan of the Fox hit "24." After all, he was President David Palmer. But when we caught up with him in Chicago last week, Haysbert told us he’s not an avid viewer anymore. And this has nothing to do with the fact that he’s affiliated with a show ("The Unit") on a different network.

Haysbert — who took in second-round NCAA tournament action at the United Center last weekend — said he believes "24" is more violent this year than ever, particularly when it comes to the torture scenes. "It’s become — for lack of a better word — a carnage hour," Haysbert, whose "24" character was assassinated, told Armour & Co. "I love the people on the show — I worked with them for a good four years. I just think they’re running out of ideas. They need to freshen it up a bit, stop the killings and stop the torture."

I disagree with his comments. Although some of the action scenes have been more violent than in the past, I don’t think there are more violent scenes than before. I wouldn’t call it a “carnage hour” at all. There have been several episodes where it seems nothing very violent happened. I would actually say some of the episodes this season have been more about politics and social issues rather than just attacking terrorist and torturing them.

I like Haysbert and miss having him on the show, but he’s a jerk for saying that.

It’s amazing to me how these people suddenly become a critic when they are no longer making a living from the work. I think 24 is a great show and if I did have a complaint it would be that there was not enough of the Jack Bauer story line. I also, agree with the other comments that this season has been more politics and social issues which if anything that has taken away from the show. It’s an action show people, yes it has violence, if you don’t like that aspect of it then 24 is probably not the show for you.

although the words may not have come out the right way, I think he is talking about relationships. He could be saying that in the previous seasons the relationships were so real and such a main focus that all of the violence was just the aftermath. But this time around the violence is the focus and the relationships are thrown in just so there is not violence back to back. I like to see evil guys get what they deserve but I was far more interested in tony, chloe, nina and all of the rest of the drama going on in the characters lives than what bad guy got killed. I only took pleasure in seeing the bad guy killed when he messed with the flow of the main characters. People can get turned off if a story is driven by character for such a long time and then becomes driven by nothing but action. There are a lot of fans that can go on for hours about relationships, interactions and deeper meanings from scenes of previous seasons. In fact from the starting line to the finish line relationships helped to connect the dots of why the problem was even taking place. But when asked about what they remember from season six it’s the killing, or the stunts. Logan ruined Chloe’s life, why didn’t she let him have it like she did with Morris? Did any of the deaths have me reaching for tissue, like when edgar died? Was jack’s family really showing me how it made jack who he is today? How many lines were witty or made me laugh? To sum it all up I think Dennis is asking for more meat and less spice. If that is what he is saying then I agree. I want the outcome but I am far more interested in the journey and the people jack meets along the way.

I agree 100% with Scholar’s take on the situation. Season 6 was a lot of action with less substance than the previous seasons. But I guess that’s to be expected when most characters that drove the heart of the show get killed off. All in all, season 6 was the least impressive season, but that being said, the last episode made it worth watching anyway. It was good to see Jack stand up for himself. He gets trodden on far too much.

i think Haysbert is just upset that they didnt have anymore useful ideas for his character so they killed him off so thats why he feels they are running out of ideas cause they couldnt use him anymore. he said its more violent this year ? what about season 2 Jack’s torture scene where his heart stopped twice

what about season 3 Chase’s torture scene ? those were quite brutal
