24’s 7th Season Postponed Indefinitely

by Diana on November 7th, 2007

Bad news guys, FOX has delayed the premiere of 24 indefinitely. 24 will not premiere until the WGA strike is over, as FOX wants to ensure that the show will be able to run all 24 episodes consecutively. Below is the 24 section of the press release that FOX sent out announcing their new strike schedule:

24” PREMIERE POSTPONED TO ENSURE “DAY 7″ PROVIDES NON-STOP ACTION

In light of the recently announced strike by The Writers Guild of America, FOX has revised its lineup for January and the remainder of the 2007-2008 season. (The new schedule is subject to change, pending resolution of the strike.)

The seventh season premiere of 24 is being postponed to ensure that “Day 7″ can air uninterrupted, in its entirety.

24 will be replaced by Prison Break in January.

Sorry guys.  Here’s hoping the strike is resolved soon.

Greedy, dumb ass writers. Maybe they can write scripts in Canada or somewhere else and outsource the writing process. Lately the writing has sucked so bad that it really doesn’t matter if they give someone else a try.

I think you folks need to understand that the writers are NOT the problem. The producers association are the problem. They won’t pay the writers for their work, yet they use it online and sell advertisements making them even more money. The writers are not millionaires but their bosses are and they aren’t sharing the wealth with the very people that help make them rich. I support the writers fully.

In any event get used to months and months of reality tv, news, and sports. The last strike lasted 22 weeks. This one will probably be longer due to the amount of money involved and the fact that they have been talking for over a year and they aren’t even close to a settlement at all.

I think 24 will have to wait until the fall of ‘08. Maybe even longer.

Thank you Chris for actually being smart. It’s the big producer companies that are to blame. If they weren’t so damn greedy 24 and all the other shows would start!…Well…Not 24. Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer), was thrown in jail for 45 days. He had been caught driving drunk!

I see that several of you are blaming the greed of the producers. I have news for you, the people in charge of the company I work for are millionaires and I am surely not, yet the work I do is what brings them in this money. The people that do the work are never the ones that profit. This WGA situation is no different. If the writers aren’t happy, they should consider a job change and open a production company.

I dont think it is fair that they arent getting paid but what do us non-union people do when we arent getting enough money from our jobs? HMMM….. hopefully they will at least come up with a better story line than what they took from seaons 1-5 and combined them into season 6

If “Upset” is referring to comments about greed, I’m the guilty party. Dear friend, please scan my comment one more time. Yes I talked about greed but not specific greed, but greed in general. I won’t pick on the WGA, Joel & Company, or Fox Studios in particular. This greed has corrupted all of the above.
I have all six seasons on DVD and having all that at one’s fingertips does produce a unique effect.
Let’s hope the issues are resolved quickly. Dammit Chloe! Hurry up with that work-around!

    Jan 14, 2008 at 6:16 pm

This is Bull**** them no good writers want all of the money from themselves and we can’t do anything about it. I think that the WGA people are just hating off of 24 because it is a most watched show and because it won an emmy. So what that kifer got in trouble last christmas break everyone does it in their lifetime and its just not right for the people who waited so long for this new season of 24 to preimere and I would like yuo to give the writers their money and play the show. for christ sake I and other people can’t wait this long if 24 season 7 premiers in 2009. this is ridiculous and I can’t take this anymore. Jack do somethng quick !!!!!

Jazplyr, my comments were not directed at you. I think I must have just been having a moment that was a culmination of a bad week at work with all of the completely unhappy people I work with, and then finding out that my one hour a week of pure contentment has been taken away from me!!! I have no problem with greed. Greed is good, just don’t let it stop productivity.

    Here is a good one that I read;
When Jack Bauer says “I don’t know if I can do this anymore”, the statement must be loosley translated as, “I can still rip off your head, I just don’t know if I feel like I can shit down your neck at this time.”

This is surreal. All this time I felt guilty because, every Monday night at 9:00 PM the real world (for me) stopped for one glorious hour and here I was, glued to the tube with the one and only network series that held interest, only to discover all of you kindred spirits. I’m truly grateful, “24″ fans, collectively, you lifted the weight from my shoulder and I feel better. I shouldn’t belabor the point but the nagging question demands answers! How come these other network shows are back, not a single one of them can hold a candle to “24″, and we the faithful followers are left with….frustration? Come on Fox, Surnow, WGA, somebody, get the issues resolved, quickly. Doesn’t anybody out there on the left coast read these viewer posts?

  • Outsource Greed
    Jan 15, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Did you know that some TV show writers earn $500k/yr or more? And they already get paid $1,000’s for reruns. How many of us can work once and get paid over and over again for the same work (same show in this case.)

I think it is time to tell the greedy writers to stick it and replace or outsource all of them. Please remember that what I consider to be their greed is hurting a lot of other workers in TV.

  • Diana
    Jan 15, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    Outsource Greed,

No one is denying that some writers make a lot of money, but this strike is not about those writers. It is about nearly half the guild that is unemployed at any given time and rely on residuals to pay their bills. In any industry, you’re going to find those who are well off, and those who are not. It’s unfortunate that you’re so unimformed about the issue that you believe that the entire writers guild is greedy.

I struck with these people yesterday, for the most part, they are not millionaires, they drive Honda Civics and have children to send to college. In short, it’s a union full of a diverse group of people.

Please, before you jump to a conclusion, read the facts.

I have bought each season and watched them all this fall and winter. I can not believe the 7th season will not be on in Jan. Writers are very greedy and many people will stop watching shows that were on 2 seasons ago. Greed will be their ruin in the end.

  • Diana

It is not greed Please, read my previous comment. The writers are not being greedy, the studios are.

  • Tim
    Jan 17, 2008 at 11:06 pm

My wife and I have debated if 24 is a soap opera or not. I would say no because they never bring back dead people. I just heard Tony is back. It really ruins my arguement. If the writers can’t come up with something better than that, they can stay on strike!
The real problem is 24 will still be the best thing on TV. With the way other shows have been going the writers are being paid too much.

  • lisa
    Jan 18, 2008 at 1:00 am

Diana is right y should the producers b payed more 4 something they produce, while the actual writers are payed SHIT-they can’t produce with no writers, so therefore it should b the people who come up wit the ideas get payed more…if u were the ones writing what would u expect?????????

    Diana,
Sorry to use the word greed on just the writers. I do not know the facts, all I know is I will miss 24 this season, and if someone is not getting paid what they deserve then the word greed belongs somewhere but I was wrong to single out the writers.

  • Tim

The studios put up all the risk in producing a show. If the show bombs they lose, if it succeeds they win. A writer gets no matter what. If he writes poorly it will be hard for him to get a job, but that’s life. This is why studios make more “There is more risk involved for them.” The more risk you take in life, the greater the reward or loss to you.

  • Tim
    Jan 18, 2008 at 9:49 am

to put it another way, if a publicly traded company pays an employee $400/wk and an investor buys 20k in stock that grows 3% in a week, the investor make more than the employee becuase he took a risk the employee didn’t. The employee was paid no matter what, but the investor could lose it all.

  • Jazplyr
    Jan 18, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Let’s be honest folks; Tim nailed it. The risk takers deserve more. For many years the winners of life’s lottery have been verbally kicked around. While I’m on my rant about honesty, how about this? Heretofore I’ve rarely watched the tube. Why? because the overwhelming bill of fare is…..junk! “24″ was inspired by the horrible events of 911. It is the lone exception to all the junk on TV with the possible exception of the NFL. The story focus is current events albeit the fact it’s content is a work of fiction.
I’m resolved to hang in there and suffer with all the “24″ faithful. It will return, sometime.

  • J Gibler
    Jan 18, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I tried Lost, tried Prison Break, Vegas, even Desperate Housewives (for heaven sakes!) TV’s history wil be recorded as b.24 and a.24 (before and after “24″) Just don’t let it stop as long as K. Sutherland is alive to give life to J. Bauer. By the way, those few days he had to do some time, will only enhance his performance skills, as the great actor he already is!

  • 24Fanatic
    Jan 18, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Well so why don’t the writers, producers, studios, FOX, and everyone else in between get with it?? I think even the most die-hard fans of the best TV shows in HISTORY lose hope sometime.. I think that the writers NEED to come to an agreement, like, SOON. I mean they’re already losing those amateur viewers that just started their FIX and they’re losing more every month. If they don’t start airing their show, they’re going to have NO viewers and what does that do for their paycheck? I think they are only hurting themselves the longer this goes on. Ever heard of a climax? THAT was the time to settle on a paycheck, now the only place to go from here is downhill. Cut your losses, you can still make some money, you can still make MORE than you did, but you have to solve your problem NOW and not waste anymore time.

  • 24Fanatic
    Jan 18, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I mean we can all agree that pretty much every other show on TV is JUNK.. right?

  • Residuals
    Jan 18, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I guess I don’t really understand why actors, writers, directors, etc… should continue to get residuals for shows that they were already paid for. In other industries, when you are hired as an employee, the employer owns whatever products are produced. It just seems like the producers could easily hire talented individuals to create great TV shows and pay them just once. A studio for example could offer to pay huge per episode salaries to people under a no-residual deal and I’m sure there would be a lot of talented people that would jump at the chance. How many people reading this would not take, say, $50,000 to work for a couple of weeks on an episode? I know not everyone would qualify, but there are a lot of talented people that would. A lot of people would love to get a break and make some big money at the same time.

  • Diana
    Jan 19, 2008 at 1:12 am

    Residuals,

It doesn’t work like that, and as a writer, I’m thankful that it doesn’t. Residuals are often how most writers survive and support their families, as writing careers can often be shortlived. Once again, this strike is not for the rich successful writers, but the majority of the guild that makes less than $50,000 a year(half the guild is unemployed at any given time). Once they can’t get staffed on shows, residuals are how they support their families. That is why residuals are important.

However, in some countries, Canada in particular, buy-outs(getting paid more up front, no residuals) are common.

  • Residuals II
    Jan 19, 2008 at 7:17 am

    Diana,

“…However, in some countries, Canada in particular, buy-outs(getting paid more up front, no residuals) are common…”

Is that why shows get produced there? Is 24 filmed in Canada?

How are residuals calculated? I’ve read that writers get tens of thousands of dollars for a single repeat episode that gets aired. Is that true? So I think the “greed” comments above may in part be to 1) reading that they get so much money for repeats, and 2) that they then go on strike. (I know the strike is about on-line downloads, but if someone is getting so much and then they strike, it can lead to certain opinions.)

  • Sonnyangel
    Jan 19, 2008 at 7:28 am

    Diana,
From what I have read it seems you are on strike. My husband was in a Union in 1988 and they went on strike, we had to move almost lost everything. He was washing windows while I was at home with two infants. In the end the Union lost !! So my husband lost all his retirement benefits and all the time (10 yrs ) that he put into the Union. The industry is still very much alive but he can no longer belong to a Union. If you are on strike, I wish you the best and hope things work out for you. I am sorry I called writers greedy but I do remember how terrible it was in 1988.
But like all the die hard fans on this link I will watch Jack when he comes back , as for the new comers I am sure they will forget all about the show when it returns.

I’m not on strike, just a supporter. I happened to be in LA last week on vacation and I joined the picket at WB for a few hours. Otherwise, I’m just a recent media graduate who’s interested in the outcome because I know it will have a future impact on me and my friends.

No, 24 is filmed in California mostly, with parts of Season 7 being filmed in Washington DC.

As for residuals, writers currently get 2.5% of what the studio makes when a rerun airs on television. They are not fighting about that number. They’re fighting to get the internet residual rate raise from ZERO to the tv rate of 2.5%. The studios are however claiming that there is no money in the internet, even though they’re contradicting themselves in interviews where they talk about the limitless potential the internet has.

So Diana, you’re NOT on strike, but your friends are? Who do they write for? And if you do, however, know the writer of 24, will you pass this message board on to him/her? I think they are the one who this whole thing is directed at :] And by the way, DO you like 24 or are you just fighting the man? lol

  • Diana
    Jan 19, 2008 at 11:02 pm

I know no one related to 24. Seriously guys, I’m a recent tv graduate, that’s it. I wish I knew people as well connected as that. I live in a different country from where it’s produced.

I think 24 revolutionized tv. Season 1-5 had moments of brilliance, and no doubt will influence future generations of television creators. There’s no doubt it’s one of the most original shows of the past 10 years. Season 5 was insanely awesome, but I’m not gonna say I loved season 6, because I didn’t. I do hope that the show will be back to its core in season 7. So yes, I do like 24.

  • When Filming Resumes
    Jan 20, 2008 at 8:23 am

Since season 7 stopped in the middle of the season, it will be interesting to see if any of the actors’ appearances change some once filming resumes. For example, if they lose or gain weight, or have a different hair style or something. I’m sure that hair styles are mandated during a normal season to remain the same, but will they remain the same over an extended strike? It would be kind of funny if someone would, say, become tan, lose 15 pounds and get a new hair style right in the middle of day 7. LOL

Well please keep us all updated since you seem to be in the loop. And that WOULD be hilarious if Chloe dyed her hair jet black and someone got an obvious nose job in between shooting. If the writers get 2.5% of what the studio makes each time a show airs on television, I agree they should be paid the same % for internet showings. However, if the studio makes nothing on an episode because they are trying to attract new viewers to a current show the 2.5% of nothing is $0.

I’ve been watching the show since season 1 and like most of you I hope the strike ends soon, but I doubt that’ll happen very soon and here’s the reason.

When a TV show is available for ITunes or a service similar to it, the production company/producers receive around an 80% of the profits for each episode sold. The writers receive nothing.

Most producers are just really connected and bring no real creativity or talent to the table. Writers generally make 100K per year on a successful TV show. But the writers don’t get a cut on the Internet buys or syndication rights — the producers do. Most successful TV shows only last 5-8 years, so when the show is cancelled, the writers are off looking for another job.

My friends and I watch 24 religiously, but the writers shouldn’t get the short end of the stick. Let them get their fair share.

And please, to the writers for season 7 — don’t give us another incoherent plot. I get shivers thinking about how poorly season 6 was written.

I’m and old geezer. Therefore, I have difficulty in grasping the meaning sometimes. That said, here’s my request: Someone, please explain why shows other than “24″ are presenting new episodes this season. Does format have a place in the mix?

  • Sonnyangel

I am an almost old geezer and I can tell you that if 24 came on this season and was like the first 3 episodes of Lost PLEASE wait for the writers to settle their stike !

A ray of hope has emerged. Rick Moran, a regular contributer to the online ‘American Thinker’ believes so. Here’s an excerpt from Rick Moran, obviously a fan of “24″:
    …………
“For myself, an end to the writer’s strike would mean the start of “24″ and the continuing adventures of Jack Bauer.

Come to think of it, one wonders how long this strike would have lasted if one side or the other had employed Mr. Bauer as a negotiator.

I doubt whether the strike would have lasted 3 hours much less three months…….”

Moran’s article carries today’s date. ‘American Thinker’ is easy to find therefore I didn’t copy the link but can do if requested.

    Sonny,

Expect it to return in January of 2009. That’s what all recent reports have indicated. They want to run the 24 episodes consecutively, without breaks, and the only way to do that, since they have 12 remaining, is to wait. They won’t put it on during the summer because that’s dead season for tv, and Fox generally likes to keep their big programs for January so when Idol returns, they win the network race every week.

I know it sucks, but we’ve got a long wait ahead of us.

  • Um....
    Feb 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm

“… They want to run the 24 episodes consecutively, without breaks, and the only way to do that, since they have 12 remaining, is to wait…” Um, they could run 2 episodes a week and get it done by May. They’d even have time to hype it for a couple of weeks first. (Wait, FOX wouldn’t hype anything, WOULD they? LOL)

  • Diana
    Feb 15, 2008 at 12:20 am

    Michael,

Not true. It takes a lot longer than one week to produce an episode of the show. Believe it or not, it takes upwards of a month to get an episode completely done. And as I mentioned to Sonny, there is no way Fox would premiere the show is the summer. Networks don’t do that for a reason, because they rely on ad revenue and in the summer networks charge way less than during a September - May schedule. And a true publicity campaign takes longer than a few weeks, it takes months, especially with such a big show.

    Sonny,

We don’t know if he did, it’s one of the unknowns about season 6. Also what I considered the most ridiculous loose plot thread.

As for season 7, Fox confirmed January 2009. Just refresh the page and check out the latest post.

Also come back on Monday when I launch my 24 rewatch, I’m going to try to get as much of the community as involved as possible. Anything to make the wait easier.

    You mean season 7..

  • JackBauerFan
    Feb 16, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Well so if they WONT premiere it during the summer, then why don’t they premiere it in September or October? Are they seriously just going to SKIP this year?? They will lose fans, there’s no doubt about that, but if they want to lose as few as possible they should premiere season 7 asap. Viewers are getting annoyed with these loose rumors about the show and will eventually give up altogether. So have a shooting spree from now until August, I think they have plenty of time; 6 months. That’s what, 2 episodes per month? Well I think thats the LEAST the fans deserve is a speedy recovery. And if the summer is dead season tv time, then shouldn’t they be taking advantage of that and use that time for filming? And honestly, I think the majority of the fans would prefer a speedy premiere than no breaks. So play 2 episodes per week for a little while, no big deal. Actually it’s probably better on the suspense management for fans.. So please all you wonderful people who put on the show known as “24″, listen to our pleas for your premiere decisions for season 7. We are dying here in our boring, non-jack-ified lives right now. Monday nights are like.. some body died. Please, reconsider your premiere plans asap.

  • Diana
    Feb 17, 2008 at 4:35 am

Because they don’t want to run two episodes per week, that’s a bad decision from a network standpoint, which is to make as much money as possible.

And they won’t do September because by putting it on in January, the combination of 24/American Idol moves Fox to the #1 network. That means a lot for ad rates,

I know it sucks, but it’s not going to be moved up, it will premiere in January 2009.

Hi “24″ fans, reality is reality, c’mon, let’s deal with it. What I’m about to write isn’t easy but it’s the truth. The market place will call the shots. The prime mover for all the networks is ratings, ratings, RATINGS! Did I make that clear enough? That’s why Fox will delay season seven until January , 2009. Does that mean there’s a risk of losing viewers? Unquestionably yes!

Since December 25th my family and I have watched seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, and we’re now on season 5. But we have no idea what we’re going to do once we finish season 6.. I’m thinking that’ll probably be in, I don’t know, 2 weeks. Any suggestions Diana?

I dont think they will lose many fans by waiting until 2009. I believe everyone here will watchit no matter when it comes back on. I am a newer fan having only started watching epsode 1 season 6 (since then season 4 & 5) but I was hooked from the first time I saw it. If they rush to get season 7 done, it wont be the quality we all expect. If the show doesnt meet our standards then they will lose viewers. In the mean time may I suggest going outside, enjoy time with your family, fight terrorist, do something so your life is not wrapped up in a tv show. Life goes on even without 24.

Ok I just saw the trailer for Season 7.. wow. How could Kieffer Sutherland agree to do this to America’s favorite TV show?? I mean first of all Tony; why??? We LOVE Tony please don’t do this! No no no no no why??? That’s the kind of heart-breaker that will make fans turn OFF the TV before the season even starts :[. Secondly, NO CTU???? Come ON!!!! They can’t be serious!! Who did this?? No no no no no no no what is 24 without CTU??? I thought the show revolved around CTU and Jack Bauer at the same time. That makes me furious.. Thirdly, they killed off everyone we liked pretty much. All we have left is Bill and Chloe (EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE PLANNING ON NOT HAVING HER THIS SEASON!!). Fourthly, WHERE THE HECK IS AUDREY?? 24 is nothing without her and no do not tell me Jack fell for someone else. That is outrageous and a very horrible idea. We still have Nina burnt into our minds. No one replaces Audrey and gets away with it.

  • JackBauerFan
    Mar 12, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Fifthly, season 6 was written horribly. I’m sorry but I’m not lying. And what ever happened to Nadia? Killing off Milo was a bad idea too. Did anyone know he was in season 2 or 3 (cant remember which)? Yes he was. And it was very obvious that they put them in there to replace Tony and Michele. Also a very bad idea. No one can truly replace them and if you were to try, don’t make it so dang obvious and poorly done. And who one earth is there left to be president? You killed off Palmer, Logan’s gone (thank goodness), Wayne’s out of it emotionally, mentally, and probably physically, so who’s left? And please don’t give us another Logan. We NEED to trust this next president. We’re still in recovery as you know.

    Mar 12, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Next there’s the problem of Kim. What is she gonna be like? Please don’t tell me she’s still with the doctor guy. But also please do because she goes through boyfriends like seasons in the year. I liked Chase what happened to him? And then there’s the question “I know we needed Chloe to do something but why did you have to make her a mom?” At least I think that’s the story. Bad idea. Very very bad idea. I would write more but we’re watching old season 5 reruns right now. :] Write more later

  • JackBauerFan
    Mar 12, 2008 at 9:26 pm

OK I’m back. Stinkin’ Chinese grude-holders :] They got him. We just finished Season 5. Getting back to the point.. and also just throwing this in, season 5 felt like it was missing a main point. All the focus was on Logan’s being brought to justice and not enough was directed to the mourning and remembrance of David Palmer. I guess Martha was the head of that committee but still.. When you see him being put onto that plane at the very end, you feel like you missed something. But I have to hand it to them, bringing in Morris was one heck of a ride :] All the insecurity and overall weirdness that we love and know to be Chloe worked at a very close and awkward position to Morris, her ex husband. That was a very humorous relationship that we grew to love too. But season 6 left a very weird starting point into season 7. So many loose ends not tied was not the ideal point to start off. We understand they were at an unsure point with Kim Raver but we really need Audrey in the next season so please make it happen. And if it doesn’t, I’m not sure if you will be seeing me watching next year. I’m already not sure (as you can imagine with all of my complaints for season 7). There’s still time, (you have the entire rest of the year), please consider our complaints (well mostly mine) and take some course of action to ensure the viewer’s attention.

I know that you guys are all pissed off that we have to wait until January of next year to get our Jack back, I know I am! Watching the last season of 24 doesn’t get our hopes up. Neither does reviving good ol’ Tony and making him evil…And CTU being gone…

And I’m sure you guys want to get your 24 on without having to watch repeats of seasons you’ve seen before! So I have started releasing the 24 Declassified book series. They are written amazingly and they give you the thrill of 24.

So far my favorite book of the series would have to be The Trojan Horse by Marc Cerasini (Yes, they are written by multiple authors).

I’ve been reading up on this for quite some time. But after reading JackBauerFan’s long posts, I thought I should just put this suggestion up.

    Until 24 returns,

I believe Chase Edmunds exited after season #3, found another woman. Elisha Cuthbert is pretty to look at but, that’s about all. Further, the Kim Bauer character was pretty lame IMHO. Of all the characters to avoid killing off, Kim Bauer! Can someone ’splain that? The wife, father, and brother; all gone. Makes no sense for me.
