James Morrison on Chemistry with Kiefer

by Diana on April 1st, 2008

Chemistry is a weird thing on television. Either actors have it, or they don’t. If they don’t no amount of writing can fix it, and if they do nothing can really compare. Thankfully James Morrison had it with Kiefer Sutherland, and in a recent interview with Malaysia’s Star Online, Morrison described why he thinks Bill Buchanan keeps coming back on 24.

“Yeah, you know, it’s interesting. I’ve seen an interesting chemistry in the work between us. And I’m not exactly sure I can describe it because we don’t really spend that much time with each other when we’re not working. We don’t spend any time with each other when we’re not working. We discuss the work. It’s all about the work, and yet we have a good relationship … but that intangible quality of chemistry … is, I think, the main reason I’m still on the show, frankly,” said Morrison.

24’s the type of show that lets characters grow naturally. As someone rewatching the earlier seasons, it’s hard to imagine a show with Bill and Chloe, but when those characters were introduced they had relatively tiny roles. It was only after the writers realized the talents and strengths of the actors that they expanded them. So that leads me to ask, what 24 character that started small ended up being your favourite? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

I wish I could say Milo. I (am probably one of the few who) enjoyed his stint on Season 1 and then when he came back for Season 6 was the second biggest shock of the opener, behind Jack’s look. Especially because it didn’t explain why he was now at CTU and of course with that comes shiftiness. I quite enjoyed most of his time in Season 6.
George Mason ranks up there as one of my favourites. Despite him being an a-hole character for most of the show, he turned out to be riveting to watch in that second season and his demise was one of the greatest in the series. I’d have to also throw Curtis up there. I believe at one stage in Season 4 he was credited as a guest star before later being bumped up to main star, which I was pleased about. I wished he had more character development as a lot of his work was just carrying a gun supporting Jack and all that field ops talk. But nevertheless.
While we’re on the topic, I’d have to say my least favourite was Sarah from Season 4. She was the most annoying character in the show to date, bar none, for me. While I was sad to see the new cast disregarded and finally whittled down to the Season 3 cast halfway through Season 4, I was glad to see her go.

Yea, definitely George and Chloe too. Remember she started out small. I recall several episodes where they had her hiding a baby. I think this is when they started working in her character.

No doubt in my mind that the character of Chloe was my favorite small role character on 24 who grew into a big part of the show.

She adds a certain bit of humor on an otherwise serious show that is manic in its destruction and killing off of main characters.

Chloe’s terse, sarcastic manner plays off Jack’s take charge damaged hero personna to a tee.

I think without her his character probably would become a little stale. (Sorry Kiefer) Jack needs someone like Chloe to keep him kind of real.

    Just my opinion.
