Why Donald Sutherland Turned Down Trying To Kill His Own Son
Remember the rumours that circulated before season 6 that Donald Sutherland would end up playing Jack Bauer’s dad? That didn’t happen and James Cromwell ended up with the role as Jack’s evil daddy. Now Donald Sutherland is revealing why he didn’t take the role, even after son Kiefer asked him to. “I said OK but on one condition, the relationship has to be the same sort of relationship Sean Connery had with Harrison Ford (in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade),” said the elder Sutherland. When Kiefer spoke to the writers they revealed that wanted Daddy Bauer to be one evil mofo, and that’s when Donald drew the line by responding with a simple “No way, that’s not going to work.”
Considering the disaster that was season 6, I think the Indiana Jones approach would have offered the writers a lot more to work with. The idea that everyone close to Bauer always ends up becoming his enemy got boring awfully quick, and the reveal that his brother was evil would have been enough.
What do you guys think, would the Indiana Jones concept have been better than what aired during season 6 with Cromwell in the role?

Oh Yea, the Indiana Jones thing would have been awesome. Especially to have Kiefer’s own dad play his dad and they look so much alike. I agree that it was so lame to have everyone close to Jack become his enemy. I still can’t figure out why his brother hated him so much.
Finally, I didn’t like seeing the actor Cromwell in this aweful part. He’s a great actor, but I still remember him in the likable pig movie. (He was really good as Prince Charles’ father in “The Queen.”)
