2nd Rome Film Festival - Photocall With Joel Surnow

This comes as a shock to absolutely no one, but Joel Surnow’s TNT show ‘Night and Day‘ has been picked up by the network.  ‘Night and Day‘ is described as a gritty drama about the life of an ATF (alcohol, tobacco, firearms) agent.

Surnow co-wrote the script and will also co-executive producer.  ‘Night and Day‘ marks Surnow’s return to tv, after he left 24 in February.

No details yet on when the show will air.

Joel Surnow Coming Back to TV

June 6, 2008 by Diana

Turner Entertainment Television has greenlit a new Joel Surnow project that’s described as “a fast-paced, gritty drama about the life of an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.” This seems more in line with Surnow’s past projects than his upcoming romantic comedy “The Face”.

Surnow will executive produce and write the currently untitled show with Todd Robinson, which is currently in development.

Surnow Goes From Terrorism To Romantic Comedy

May 25, 2008 by Diana

Joel Surnow left 24 earlier this year to pursue new opportunities, and now he’s found them. Morgan Creek Productions has bought Surnow’s screenplay for a romantic comedy titled ‘That Face.’ The story is about a photographer who brands a woman he meets on the street as the next great supermodel, only to discover that she’s rather crass and just the opposite. He of course must mold her to be the woman he said she was.

I can only assume that throughout this journey he’ll discover that he’s in love with her. Kinda like Freddie Prinze Jr. did in ‘She’s All That’ or maybe like Henry Higgins and Eliza Dolittle, especially since this sounds like a mild copy of ‘Pygmalion’. And my mild I mean remake without the credit.

Joel Surnow Quits 24

February 12, 2008 by Diana

Joel-Surnow24 creator/executive producer Joel Surnow has asked 20th Century Fox to be released from his contract, which was originally supposed to go until April 30th, 2008. Surnow has been one of the major creative forces behind the show, not only as co-creator, but often as head writer. Odds are Surnow’s departure won’t affect the plot of season 7 directly, but it’s hard to imagine how it won’t affect the show in some way.

This is the latest in a series of set backs for 24, which due to the writers’ strike will not hit the airwaves until January 2009. I’ll update with more information as soon as I get it.

Joel Surnow on Jack Bauer

November 13, 2007 by Diana

JoelSurnowJoel Surnow, executive producer of 24, recently spoke to a group of young conservative activists in Washington, and of course, the topic of 24 came up. Below is an except of Surnow’s comments to the students about Jack Bauer:

He described the Fox network series’ protagonist, counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer, as “a tragic character” who has been emotionally damaged by his experiences.

“There’s nothing left but to do the right thing,” Mr. Surnow said of the character portrayed for seven seasons by Keifer Sutherland. “He’s come to symbolize this sort of pure killing machine that all of us secretly want to unleash on the bad guys.”

The character “really represents just justice,” he said, describing Bauer’s attitude as, “They’re bad, we’re good and we’re going to get them.

When Surnow (a staunch conservative) was asked by a student why he hired liberal Janeane Garofalo, he took the professional answer, saying, “Because she’s a great actress.”
